Flooring It in the UK

October 20, 2010

The UK is still looking at unilaterally imposing a price floor on carbon emissions. According to Point Carbon (subs’n req’d)..

The government will launch a consultation on how and when a carbon price floor can be introduced later this year, Huhne told journalists in a briefing today.

The feedback will be used to form part of the government’s planned energy bill next spring, he added.

Huhne confirmed eight sites around the country that are suitable for nuclear plants, but stressed decisions over whether to build on the sites must come from the private sector.

Power company EdF has said it plans to have a new nuclear plant installed in 2018 and fellow utilities Eon, Iberdrola and RWE also intend to build new ones by 2025.

“It is vital that we progress quickly with building new power stations. Energy companies must invest £200 billion in the next decade to meet our environmental commitments and to replace power stations due to close,” said David Porter, head of the Association of Electricity Producers in a statement.
